Think all that canna-mom messaging around marijuana is harmless? Think again. A new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine from researchers at UNLV and UT-San Antonio found that marijuana use prevalence was 6.8% among pregnant women—and that first-trimester use was highest at 10.1%, peaking at 14.2% in 2022. (The first trimester is a key developmental phase for in utero babies.) These numbers are especially horrific in light of another study on the neonatal outcomes of marijuana use during pregnancy. That is associated with preterm birth and perinatal mortality. The next time you see some glowing, moneyed momfluencer shouting about the virtues of marijuana as a modern version of Mother’s Little Helper, remember that this is what actually happens to babies and families as a result of weed use.
