Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS)—bouts of uncontrollable vomiting brought on by heavy marijuana use, also known as “scromiting”; it’s a condition so serious the World Health Organization has just given it its own diagnostic code—is on the rise. Just how much? Per a new study by researchers from the University of Illinois-Chicago, in 2016 there were 4.4 cases per 100,000 ER visits; by 2022 that number had risen to 22.3, an increase of about 407%. No wonder this alarming condition has been getting so much media attention lately. That’s a good thing: It highlights an overlooked danger of a drug an addiction-for-profit industry has been insisting for decades is harmless.
