Friday Fact: 62% of U.S. young adult past-month marijuana users use marijuana while driving

A recent study in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, based on a sample of 18-29-year-olds who reported driving after using marijuana at least 3 times in the past 3 months, found that 62% reported driving while using marijuana and that this occurred on an average of 10 occasions in the past 3 months. It also found that respondents reported driving after using marijuana an average of 25 times during that 3-month period. The study noted that participants estimated that they were high for an average of 31 hours each week. The authors concluded, “driving after cannabis use (DACU) continues to be a pressing public health issue, especially as cannabis legalization and frequent use increase among emerging adults.” The danger Big Weed puts us all in looks set to increase—especially on the roads.
