Friday Fact: 6% of U.S. marijuana users experienced cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), also known as scromiting, in the past year

A recent study in the International Journal of Drug Policy, citing data from the 2023 International Cannabis Policy Study, found that 6% of past-year marijuana users between the ages of 16–65 reported experiencing cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) in the past year. The study, led by researchers in Washington state, also found that younger individuals and males were more likely to experience CHS. CHS causes intense pain, nausea, and vomiting; the only way to cure it is to stop using marijuana. Policymakers should better educate Americans about the potential harms of marijuana and oppose efforts to increase access to the mind-altering drug.
