A recent study, drawing on data from the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, found that individuals who used marijuana in the past year were 12.1 times more likely to have used psilocybin in the past year than individuals who did not use marijuana. The past-year use of tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, LSD, ketamine, ecstasy, and DMT was also associated with psilocybin use, illustrating how the use of one substance often increases the likelihood of using a second substance. The authors noted that “these patterns highlight the importance of considering psilocybin within the broader landscape of polysubstance use, especially when assessing potential health risks or designing prevention strategies.” These issues will likely be exacerbated in the coming years as psychedelics are increasingly normalized and commercialized.
