Friday Fact: Delta-8 use is increasing among high school marijuana users

Among 12th graders who used any type of marijuana in the past year, the percentage that used Delta-8 THC increased from 36.1% in 2023 to 45.8% in 2024, according to a recent study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. What’s more, the study, which analyzed data from the Monitoring the Future Survey, found that the percentage of 12th-grade marijuana users who co-used marijuana and Delta-8 THC increased from 32.8% to 43.0%. Rather than exclusively using one product, 12th graders are increasingly mixing them. The study, led by researchers at the University of Southern California, concluded that “addressing delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol and other intoxicating hemp products alongside marijuana in cannabis interventions, surveillance, and policies is critical for protecting U.S. youth.”
