Friday Fact: In recreational legal states, 63% of people 16-20 reported seeing marijuana ads

Big Marijuana promises not to promote products to kids. But the data shows that’s not true. A recent study in Drug and Alcohol Review found that the majority of residents aged 16 or older in states that have legalized recreational marijuana reported exposure to marijuana advertising (e.g., billboards and social media). Notably, the study reported that “cannabis marketing exposure was highest among people below the minimum legal age,” noting that 63% of individuals aged 16–20 reported exposure. Yet another reason the blockbuster New York Times turnaround on the risks of legalized weed is so timely.
