A recent meta-analysis of 63 studies, published in Psychological Medicine, found that people in the general population who used marijuana had 2.05 times the odds of being perpetrators of violence compared to non-users of marijuana. The researchers, based at King’s College London, also found that marijuana users in the general population had 3.75 times the odds of being perpetrators of violence that results in a criminal conviction. The researchers argued that “violence should be considered alongside other established cannabis-related harms when developing prevention strategies, public education campaigns, and regulatory policies, particularly in jurisdictions where cannabis has been legalized or decriminalized.”

The findings add to a growing body of research on marijuana and violence, much of it tied to the drug’s well-documented link to psychotic disorders.
